Global Warming – An Alternate Viewpoint – Part 3

Last post we looked at the assumption that Global Warming isn’t happening. But what if it is, and no one believes in it?

Global Warming – Why Don’t People Believe in it?

There are a variety of reasons that people don’t believe in Global Warming. This list is not exhaustive, but does cover the reasons I’ve heard.

God’s Promise to Noah

In Genesis 8:20 after Noah and his family have left the ark, Noah builds an altar and burnt offerings on it to the Lord. In the next chapter, Genesis 8:21 it reads:

English Standard Version: And when the Lord smelled the pleasing aroma, the Lord said in his heart, “I will never again curse the ground because of man, for the intention of man’s heart is evil from his youth.Neither will I ever again strike down every living creature as I have done.

New International Version: The Lord smelled the pleasing aroma and said in his heart: “Never again will I curse the ground because of humans, even though every inclination of the human heart is evil from childhood. And never again will I destroy all living creatures, as I have done.

King James Version: And the Lord smelled a sweet savour; and the Lord said in his heart, I will not again curse the ground any more for man’s sake; for the imagination of man’s heart is evil from his youth; neither will I again smite any more every thing living, as I have done.

New American Standard Bible: The Lord smelled the soothing aroma; and the Lord said to Himself, “I will never again curse the ground on account of man, for the intent of man’s heart is evil from his youth; and I will never again destroy every living thing, as I have done.

21st Century King James Version: And the Lord smelled a sweet savor; and the Lord said in His heart, “I will not again curse the ground any more for man’s sake, for the imagination of man’s heart is evil from his youth; neither will I again smite any more every thing living, as I have done.

I’ve picked some of the most popular Bibles, and you’ll note that the words are nearly identical. Effectively the biblical god promises he will never again curse the ground for man’s sake. This is the argument that is used to prove that Global Warming aka Climate Change, can’t be happening.

The problem is that while the god has promised (according to the bible) not to curse the ground (which probably includes the water and air as well), he hasn’t promised that he’ll prevent us from doing bad things to it. In fact the god says in the bible that man is evil in his heart, and therefore likely to do evil things. Like damage the planet.

There’s a wide range of other Bible translations. Bible Gateway, Biblia, and Project Gutenberg have a wide range of Bibles, for those interested in checking further. They all say the same thing, in different words.

But it’s Colder (Or there’s more Snow)

This is a fascinating argument. I’ve heard it from a lot of people, in a lot of different places. But what about where I live?

Believe it or not, one January a couple of years ago the temperature outside hit 50 degrees Fahrenheit in Cobalt Ontario, a small town that’s fairly far north. It just doesn’t get that warm there normally. There is snow on the ground from the second week of November through to late April. The ice usually doesn’t come off the lakes until mid-May. But it is melting earlier every year.

My brother-in-law was teaching high school up on the shores of Hudson’s Bay, and they’ve had massive flooding problems because the snow is melting faster than it ever has.

So you may be seeing more cold. Other places are seeing more warm. To get a good idea of what is happening, you need to track measurements over the entire planet.

The Oncoming Ice Age

There’s been a lot of argument that we should be seeing an oncoming Ice Age. Part of the theory is covered in Larry NivenJerry Pournelle, and Michael Flynn‘s science fiction novel Fallen Angels.

Why am I mentioning a science fiction novel? Because this novel is incredibly popular, and has been read by more people than any Scientific tract on climate. And the writers have a reputation for getting the science they use right.

This time they were right and wrong. The planetary climate isn’t cooling, but there’s this discussion of “throwing another log on the fire.” This is exemplified by one community that the characters find, which is burning stuff like crazy, which has caused a localized case of warming. Niven, Pournelle, and Flynn understand the Greenhouse Effect, and used it. By doing this they gave a great example of how it works in real life.

I’m going to stop here for now — life is happening, and this topic is huge. I just don’t have the time today to cover all that I want to cover, never mind all that I need to cover.

Comments as always are appreciated.
